Description
The Kyalami marked the end—and the beginning—of an era. It was the last Maserati coupe equipped with the illustrious V8 engine, while it was the first car developed under the new ownership of Alejandro De Tomaso. The Kyalami was actually based on De Tomaso’s own Longchamp model, but the Ford V8 engine was replaced in favor of Maserati’s own four-cam V8, and the original design from Tom Tjaarda was elegantly reworked by Pietro Frua. About 210 units were produced between 1976 and 1983. Its name derives from the South African racetrack where the Maserati-engined Cooper Formula 1 cars scored an important win almost a decade earlier.
